A CCTV camera shows you what’s physically wrong inside a pipe, cracks, root intrusion, joint displacement. What it can’t always tell you is where a particular flow of water is actually going, or coming from, once it leaves your sight underground. That’s the specific gap dye testing fills. Introducing a strongly coloured, non-toxic tracer dye into a fixture or pipe and watching where it turns up confirms connections and leak paths that a camera pass alone can leave ambiguous.
What dye testing is for
Dye testing answers a narrower, more specific question than a standard CCTV inspection: does this pipe connect to that outlet, and does it do so the way it’s supposed to? It’s most useful in three situations.
Cross-connections between sewer and stormwater. On older Central Coast properties, particularly those that have been extended, renovated or had additional fixtures plumbed in over the decades, it’s not unusual to find a stormwater downpipe or yard drain that’s been incorrectly connected into the sewer system, or, less commonly, a laundry or bathroom waste that’s been plumbed into what should be a stormwater-only line. Both are compliance problems as well as functional ones. A camera pass can show you a pipe junction exists; it can’t always tell you which system that junction actually belongs to, especially where old plumbing has been altered more than once. Dye poured into a suspect fixture and tracked to its actual discharge point settles the question directly.
Confirming discharge points. Where a property’s drainage plan is unclear, unusual on older Central Coast homes that started as holiday shacks and were extended multiple times without updated documentation, dye testing confirms exactly where a given fixture’s waste ends up: the sewer main, a stormwater pit, a creek line, or an on-site absorption system.
Locating leak paths that don’t show clearly on camera. Some leaks, particularly slow ones through a fine crack or a partially open joint, don’t produce an obvious visual defect on CCTV footage, especially in wet conditions where minor seepage is hard to distinguish from ordinary pipe wall moisture. Dye introduced upstream of a suspected leak and monitored at ground level or in a neighbouring inspection point can confirm exactly where water is escaping.
How a dye test actually works
The process starts with introducing a measured amount of tracer dye, usually a bright fluorescent green or red compound that’s easily visible and safe for stormwater and sewer systems, into the fixture or pipe section being tested. Water is then run through the system, either from that same fixture or as a controlled flush, to carry the dye along its actual flow path. We then monitor the likely discharge points: stormwater pits, creek outlets, neighbouring inspection points, or the sewer boundary trap, watching for the dye’s appearance and timing it against the water introduced upstream.
For cross-connection testing specifically, this often means one operator introducing dye at the suspect fixture while a second monitors the stormwater pit or sewer access point, confirming in real time whether, and how quickly, the dye appears where it shouldn’t. Where CCTV access is available, dye can also be introduced upstream of a camera positioned at a suspected leak point, letting us watch the dye’s exact path and timing on screen rather than relying solely on surface observation.
Timing matters here. A cross-connection typically shows dye appearing at the wrong discharge point within minutes. A slow structural leak might take considerably longer to show any surface indication at all, which is part of why dye testing is usually paired with, rather than used instead of, a standard CCTV inspection: the camera shows the physical condition of the pipe, and the dye confirms where the water in it is actually travelling.
When dye testing is the right next step
Dye testing earns its cost in a specific set of situations rather than as a routine add-on to every inspection. It’s worth considering when a CCTV inspection has found a junction or connection whose purpose isn’t clear from the footage alone, when Council or a strata scheme has raised a suspected illegal stormwater discharge into the sewer system, when a persistently wet patch or unexplained flow appears at a stormwater pit or creek outlet with no obvious camera-visible cause, or as part of pre-purchase due diligence on an older property with a history of unpermitted renovations. It’s less useful as a first step for a straightforward recurring blockage, where a standard CCTV inspection and, where relevant, gradient testing (see our guide to fall testing and measuring pipe gradient) will usually identify the structural cause more directly.
What it costs
Dye testing is typically quoted as an add-on to a standard CCTV inspection where a specific connection or discharge point needs confirming, since it generally uses the same access points and, often, the same site visit. As a standalone service, for example confirming a suspected cross-connection ahead of a Council enquiry or a pre-purchase report, a dye test is generally in a similar range to a standard residential CCTV inspection, with the final cost depending on how many fixtures and discharge points need monitoring. Frequently asked questions
Is the dye harmful to my garden, my septic system or the environment? No. The tracer dyes used for this purpose are non-toxic and designed specifically for plumbing and stormwater tracing. Any residual colour dilutes and fades quickly and doesn’t harm plants, soil or waterways.

The fix depends on what’s found, sometimes a straightforward re-plumb of a single fixture, sometimes a more involved correction if the cross-connection is buried deep in the system.
