What Is Pipe Relining and How Does It Work?
Pipe relining — specifically CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) relining — is the most proven trenchless pipe repair technology available. Here’s the process:
-
CCTV inspection first. We run a high-resolution drain camera through your pipe system to map every crack, root intrusion, offset joint and collapsed section. You receive a written report with footage.
-
High-pressure water jetting. We clear the pipe of debris, roots and scale to give the liner a clean surface to bond to.
-
Liner installation. A flexible felt liner, pre-saturated with two-part epoxy or polyester resin, is inverted or pulled into the host pipe.
-
Cure. UV light, steam or ambient cure hardens the resin into a rigid, seamless structural pipe within the original pipe. This takes 1-3 hours depending on diameter and length.
-
Robotic reinstatement. For pipes with lateral connections, a robotic cutter reopens the junction from inside — no external digging.
-
Post-cure CCTV. We inspect the finished liner to confirm it is fully adhered, joint-free and structurally sound.
The result is a pipe with a smooth epoxy bore, no joints for roots to exploit, and a 50-year structural warranty. Read the full explainer →
No Trenching. Here's What That Means for Your Property
Dig-and-replace pipe work is destructive. Before you even get to the pipe repair, you’ve paid for:
- Excavation of your lawn, garden, driveway or concrete path
- Traffic control or Council permits if the work reaches a footpath
- Demolition and re-pouring of concrete slabs (driveways run $150–$250/m² to replace)
- Reinstatement of turf, garden beds, paving or tiling
- 1–2 weeks of works vs 1–2 days for relining
On a typical 1970s Central Coast home — a 10-metre sewer line running from the bathroom stack to the boundary — dig-and-replace can cost $15,000–$25,000 once reinstatement is factored in. Pipe relining of the same run typically costs $6,000–$10,000 with zero surface damage.

How Much Does Pipe Relining Cost?
Pricing is per-metre for the pipe length relined, with a setup/minimum charge that covers the CCTV inspection, jetting and mobilisation.
| Job Type | Typical Cost |
|---|---|
| CCTV drain inspection (standalone) | $250–$500 |
| Sewer relining (per metre) | $500–$1,000/m |
| Setup / first metre (all-in) | $2,500–$3,000 |
| Full residential sewer reline (10–15m) | $6,000–$12,000 |
| Point repair / junction patch | $1,800–$3,500 |
| Stormwater relining (per metre) | $400–$800/m |
| Average 1970s Central Coast home | $5,500–$7,000 |
CCTV inspection fees are typically waived or credited when relining proceeds on the same day.
What Homeowners Ask Us
Q: My plumber just cleared a root blockage. Do I really need to reline? Not always — but if this is the second or third time roots have blocked that same line, jetting is temporary relief. The roots will regrow within 6–18 months. CCTV inspection after jetting will show whether the pipe wall is cracked or the joint displaced. If it is, relining is the permanent fix. If the pipe wall is intact and roots just re-entered a single joint, a point repair may be sufficient.
Q: Will I need to dig up my driveway? Almost certainly not. The liner is inserted through an existing access point — your floor waste, a cleanout, or a small inspection opening. In some cases we make a single 300mm access hole, but this is far from the full-length trenching of traditional replacement.
Q: How long does pipe relining take? Most residential sewer relining jobs are complete in a single day. CCTV inspection in the morning, jetting and preparation, liner installation and cure by mid-afternoon, post-cure CCTV and sign-off before we leave.
Q: Does pipe relining need council approval? For relining works on your private pipe (inside your property boundary), no council approval is required. Works that touch the public sewer main or council-owned stormwater infrastructure have different requirements. Full guide →
Q: Is pipe relining covered by home insurance? In most cases, no. Standard home insurance policies exclude gradual deterioration and maintenance issues — and most pipe failures on Central Coast properties fall into this category. A sudden, unexpected pipe collapse caused by an external event (such as a tree falling on an exposed line) may be claimable. Full insurance guide →
Q: What’s the warranty on a relined pipe? The CIPP liner itself carries a 50-year product warranty from the manufacturer. We provide a workmanship warranty on top of this. For comparison, a replaced PVC pipe has an 80–100 year lifespan but requires full excavation and reinstatement. Warranty and lifespan guide →
